Za jeden z největších benefitů, které tento stroj na rozdíl od jeho předchůdců přináší, se považuje jeho přelomová kapacita palivových nádrží. Zatímco původní verze staršího tankovacího letounu Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker dokázala přepravovat 91 000 kg paliva, Airbus A-330 MRTT dokáže převážet až 111 000 kg. Palivo navíc uskladňuje v křídlech, díky čemuž má trup volný pro transport nákladu či osob. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Výhodou je také to, že má stejné křídlo jako čtyřmotorový A340, avšak je pouze dvoumotorový. Díky tomu lze na křídlech využít dva úchytné body navíc pro instalaci tankovacích podvěsů. Na rozdíl od mnoha svých konkurentů tak A-330 MRTT disponuje jak ráhnovým, tak hadicovým systémem tankování, které mu umožňují doplnit palivo do širokého spektra letadel. Tankovací mise přitom dosahují úspěšnosti až 97 %. Jeho dva motory se dělají ve dvou variantách – buďto Rolls-Royce Trent 700 či General Electric CF6-80E1, přičemž každý motor poskytuje tah až 320 kN. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>K červenci roku 2024 bylo objednáno až 78 letounů a vyrobeno 60 kusů. Od prvního letu v roce 2007 nalétaly tyto stroje více než 275 000 hodin a byly využity 15 zeměmi světa – například Austrálií, Saudskou Arábií, Singapurem, Jižní Koreou, Spojenými arabskými emiráty, Velkou Británií, Španělskem, Kanadou, Francií a dalšími státy NATO. Captain Thomas Kompalla pushes his aircraft to its limits, showcasing the maximum maneuverability of this 80-ton, four-engine high-wing plane.
